Hot Water System Buying Guide for Latrobe Valley Homes
Choosing a hot water system can be confusing. This guide breaks down the options — gas, electric, heat pump and solar — and what works best for Morwell and Latrobe Valley homes in 2026.
Replacing a hot water system is one of those purchases you rarely plan for — it usually happens in a panic after the old one dies. But if you're replacing an aging system before it fails, or building a new home, a little knowledge goes a long way. Here's a straightforward guide to choosing the right hot water system for a Morwell or Latrobe Valley home in 2026.
The Four Main Types
There are four main types of hot water system in Australian homes: electric storage, gas storage, gas continuous flow (instantaneous), and heat pump or solar. Each has different running costs, upfront costs, and suitability for the Latrobe Valley's climate and water supply.
Electric Storage
Electric storage systems heat water in an insulated tank using electric elements. They're cheap to buy but expensive to run — they're one of the biggest energy users in an older Morwell home. If you're currently on an electric storage system, this is the system most worth upgrading from, because heat pump and solar alternatives can cut running costs by up to 75% and attract significant government rebates.
Gas Storage
Gas storage systems heat a tank of water using a gas burner. They're cheaper to run than electric storage and a good option if you have reticulated natural gas (which most of Morwell, Traralgon and Moe do). They recover faster than electric systems, so they suit larger households. The downside is they still waste energy keeping a tank hot when you're not using it.
Gas Continuous Flow (Instantaneous)
Gas continuous flow systems heat water on demand as it passes through the unit — there's no tank, so there's no standby heat loss. They're very efficient, never run out of hot water, and take up less space. They're an excellent choice for Morwell homes with natural gas, especially smaller households or those wanting endless hot water. The main consideration is flow rate — you need a unit sized to handle your peak demand (e.g. two showers running at once).
Heat Pump
Heat pump systems use the same technology as a reverse-cycle air conditioner to extract heat from the ambient air and use it to heat water. They use roughly a quarter of the electricity of an electric storage system, making them very cheap to run. They work effectively down to near-freezing, so they suit the Latrobe Valley's climate well. And crucially, upgrading from an electric storage system to a heat pump attracts the biggest government rebates — often $3,000 or more under the VEU program. For most Morwell homes currently on electric storage, a heat pump is the standout upgrade.
Solar Hot Water
Solar hot water systems use roof-mounted collectors to heat water using the sun. They're the cheapest to run of all options — in summer, the sun does almost all the work. They do need a booster (gas or electric) for cloudy winter days, and they require a suitable north-facing roof. Solar hot water also attracts Solar Victoria rebates and federal STCs, making the upfront cost more manageable.
Which Is Best for Your Morwell Home?
There's no single best answer — it depends on your existing setup, household size, roof, and whether you have gas. As a rule of thumb: if you're on electric storage, a heat pump is usually the best upgrade (lowest running cost, biggest rebate). If you have natural gas, a continuous flow system is hard to beat for efficiency and endless hot water. If you have a good north-facing roof, solar is worth considering. Don't Forget the Rebates
Before you decide, check what rebates you're eligible for. The VEU program, Solar Victoria rebates and federal STCs can dramatically reduce the cost of a heat pump or solar upgrade. We handle all the paperwork and apply the discount up front. See our hot water rebates page for details.
